The Middle English Emaré is extant in only one manuscript, Cotton Caligula A. ii, which dates from the early fifteenth-century.

The manuscript also contains Thomas Chestre's Sir Launfal (a lay included in this volume) as well as eight other metrical narratives. Although the MS dates from the early fifteenth century, the dialect features in Emaré indicate a late fourteenth-century Northeast.
